Loire wines: A unique diversity

Terroir and climate: Secrets of the diversity of Loire wines

Presentation of the terroir and each microclimate

Loire wines reflect an exceptional terroir that stretches over 1,000 kilometres along the Loire River. The soil can vary from one commune to another, which offers a great diversity of growing conditions, with a patchwork of:

  • Limestone.
  • Shale.
  • Clay.
  • Sand.
  • Gravel.

Each appellation benefits from a unique environment which marks the different Loire wines .

The climate also plays a determining role. We find the oceanic influence on the vineyards of Anjou and Muscadet , to the more continental one on the vineyards of Touraine and Sancerre . Each microclimate contributes to the singularity of Loire wines . This climatic diversity allows winegrowers to cultivate a wide range of grape varieties.

A 2,000-year history: The viticultural heritage of Loire wine

Loire wine is the fruit of a rich history of more than 2,000 years . This history is deeply rooted in traditional French culture.

The first vines: Roman influence

The wine history of the Loire Valley dates back to Gallo-Roman times. The Romans introduced vines to the region around the 1st century . The fertile soils and favorable climate of the Loire Valley allowed the vines to thrive, allowing the wines to develop quickly and become known.

The Rise in the Middle Ages: Between Abbeys and Kings of France

In the Middle Ages, viticulture in the Loire Valley, driven by Benedictine and Cistercian monks, developed drastically. The abbeys became cultural centres where knowledge was transmitted around wine . Loire wines became popular at the court of the kings of France (particularly during the reign of Francis I). This would result in the expansion of plantations and vineyards in the Loire Valley.
